TP celebrates National Children’s Book Day with a musical performance of Sandosenang Sapatos this coming July 2013!

In time for the commemoration of the 28th National Children’s Book day and Tanghalang Pilipino’s 27th theater season, the Cultural Center of the Philippines and Philippine Board on Books for Young people present Sandosenang Sapatos of Palanca Awardee and renowned playwright Layeta P. Bucoy. This musical production will be brought to life by the arrangement and composition of Noel Cabangon and Jed Balsamo this coming July 2013.

The play is adapted from Dr. Luis P. Gatmaitan’s book which he wrote after reading various children’s stories during his sponsored training course in writing non-fiction books for youth at Tokyo, Japan. These books centered themselves on motifs of Japanese’s affection, concern and respect for people with disabilities.

Sandosenang Sapatos tells a narrative of a Filipino middle class household composed of a father, who makes a living out of shoes, his wife and two children. The premise of its plot lies on the shoemaker’s dream to have a ballerina as a daughter someday and to make the best shoes for her. It continues as his family faces struggles after realizing that the younger child has incapacitated limbs. As the younger daughter gets older, she would experience maltreatment and unjust stereotypes that her society attaches to physically-challenged people. Certainly, this play attempts to reflect on what it means to support and care for one’s family members, especially those who need it most.

The cast of Sandosenang Sapatos consists of Jonathan Tadioan (the father/shoemaker), May Bayot (the wife), Trixie Esteban (Susie) and Tessa Prieto Valdez (Diwata), Racquel Tajonera (Diwata Understudy) and other artists from TP Actors Company namely Regina De Vera, Marco Viaña, Ralph Mateo, Nicolo Magno, Remus Villanueva, Jovanni Cadag, DorayDayao, Llorvie Nuevo, Jan Vincent T. Ibesate, Aldo Glenn Vencilao and Antonette Go.

The play is directed by Tuxqs Rutaquio with TJ Ramos as the production’s sound designer and Gerald Mercado as its choreographer.
