Likhaan Journal 8 extends deadline for submissions to May 7

The UP Institute of Creative Writing (ICW) has extended to May 7, the deadline for submissions for the eighth issue of Likhaan: The Journal of Contemporary Philippine Literature.

The editorial board, led by award-winning fiction writer and ICW associate Rosario Cruz-Lucero, granted the extension to allow more regional writers to submit their work.

The Philippines’ leading literary peer-reviewed journal, the Likhaan Journal is published annually with funding from the Office of the Chancellor of UP Diliman. It features the best of new and unpublished Philippine writing in English and Filipino. Submissions to the journal undergo a strict pre-screening and blind refereeing process by both the editors and a panel of referees composed of eminent writers and critics from within and outside UP.

Lucero will be the issue editor, while award-winning writer Heidi Eusebio Abad and Palanca Hall of Fame awardee Eugene Evasco will serve as associate editors in English and Filipino, respectively.

The guidelines follow:

1. For its eighth issue, Likhaan: The Journal of Contemporary Philippine Literature will accept submissions in the following genres, in both English and Filipino:

Short stories ranging from about 12 to 30 pages double-spaced, in 11-12 points Times Roman, New York, Palatino, Book Antique, Arial or some such standard font. (A suite of short prose pieces will be considered.)
A suite of four to seven poems, out of which the editors might choose three to five. (Long poems will be considered in lieu of a suite.)
Literary and personal essays, including memoirs, profiles, etc., subject to the same length limitations as short stories (see above).
Critical/scholarly essays, subject to the same length limitations as short stories (see above)
Excerpts from graphic novels, or full, short graphic stories, for reproduction in black and white on no more than 10 printed pages, 6” x 9.” (Excerpts should be accompanied by a synopsis of the full narrative.)
2. All submissions must be original and previously unpublished.

3. All submissions must be accompanied by a cover letter (including the author’s contact information) and a biographical sketch of no more than one or two short paragraphs.

4. Submissions may be e-mailed to likhaan.journal8@gmail.com, or posted to The Editors, Likhaan Journal, UP Institute of Creative Writing, Rizal Hall, University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City, 1101.

5. For submissions sent via e-mail, please use the following subject line and filename format: [Language], [Genre], [Title], [Author’s Last Name]. For example: English, Fiction, “The Life,” Aquino. The attachment should either be a .DOC, .DOCX or .RTF file.

6. All submissions should be received (whether by e-mail or post) no later than May 7.

7. All submissions will undergo a strict pre-screening and blind refereeing process by the editors, and a panel of referees composed of eminent writers and critics from within and outside the University of the Philippines.

8. Writers whose work will be accepted for publication will receive a substantial cash payment and a copy of the published journal.

9. The editors reserve the right to edit any and all materials accepted for publication.

10. The editors may also solicit or commission special, non-refereed articles for publication outside of the aforementioned genres and categories to enhance the editorial content and balance of the journal.

FWGP and NBDB host TAXTalks, a discussion on taxes for writers

On March 3, 2014, the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) issued RR 4-2014 or the “Guidelines and Policies for the Monitoring of Service Fees of Professionals.” In it self-employed professionals are now being asked to issue official receipts and to register their books and receipts annually, among other requirements. This new regulation has been met with confusion among members of the self-employed sector, including freelance writers.

To help self-employed writers understand the provisions in the new regulation, the Freelance Writers’ Guild of the Philippines (FWGP) together with the National Book Development Board (NBDB) are hosting a roundtable discussion between the writers and representatives from the BIR. Tax lawyers and accountants are also expected to be on hand to answer questions from the writers.

All professional writers are invited to attend TAXTalks on May 2, 2014 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. The event will be held at the NBDB office at Unit 2401 Prestige Tower, F. Ortigas Jr. Avenue, Ortigas Center, Pasig. FWGP encourages writers to speak out and ask their questions since this new regulation is going to change the way writers earn their living.

64th Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards now accepting entries, facilitates submission

Now on its 64th year, the Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature (the Palanca Awards), the most prestigious and longest-running literary competition in the Philippines, is now accepting entries for its annual literary tilt.

This year, the Palanca Awards has enhanced its submission system to facilitate the submission of entries, particularly for aspiring and professional literary artists who wish to join the competition but are based in the provinces or overseas. Contestants will no longer be required to submit hard copies of entries, which saves on printing and courier service costs.

Online submission to the 64th Palanca Awards may be done through the official website, www.palancaawards.com.ph, where the contest documents may be downloaded. The accomplished forms and entries may then be uploaded and submitted through the website. To complete the submission process, hard copies of the notarized contest documents must be submitted to any of the following addresses: (1) Unit 603, 6th Floor Park Trade Centre Bldg., 1716 Investment Drive Madrigal Business Park, Ayala Alabang, Muntinlupa City; or (2) Unit 3G, OPL Bldg., 100 C. Palanca St., Legaspi Village, Makati City. The contest rules are also posted on the Palanca Awards Facebook page at www.facebook.com/palancaawards.

Organized and sponsored by the Carlos Palanca Foundation, Inc., the 64th Palanca Awards is accepting entries in the following categories:

  • English Division – Short Story, Short Story for Children, Essay, Poetry, Poetry Written for Children, One-act Play, and Full-length Play;
  • Filipino Division – Maikling Kuwento, Maikling Kuwentong Pambata, Sanaysay, Tula, Tula para sa mga Bata, Dulang May Isang Yugto, Dulang Ganap ang Haba, at Dulang Pampelikula;
  • Regional Languages Division – Short Story-Cebuano, Short Story-Hiligaynon, and Short Story-Iluko.

In addition, the Palanca Awards welcomes submissions for the Kabataan Division, which specifically caters to young writers below 18 years old as of 30 April 2014. This year’s Kabataan Division theme is, “How can the youth help in natural disaster preparedness in the country?” for the English category and “Paano makatutulong ang mga kabataan sa paghahanda ng bayan para sa mga kalamidad?” for the Filipino category.

Notably, as the Novel and Nobela categories are only accepting entries every two years, they will be closed for this year’s competition since it was offered in2013.

Aspiring and professional writers may submit only one entry per category. All entries must be submitted on or before the contest deadline as stated in the contest rules. Winners will be awarded at a special ceremony to be held on 1 September 2014.

Established in 1950 to honor the legacy of businessman and philanthropist Don Carlos Palanca, Sr., the Palanca Awards aims to develop Philippine Literature by providing incentives for writers to craft their most outstanding literary works and by being a treasury of these literary gems.
