In 2013, Battalia’s playwrights David Finnigan, Georgie McAuley, Jordan Prosser and Sam Burns-Warr forming the Too Many Weapons Collective, created Kids Killing Kids(KKK), a documentary theater response to Battalia Royale. Toured in Australia, KKK employed performance and rehearsal footage, interviews, personal stories, open discussion and reenactment to reflect on the qualities of cross-cultural collaboration, contemporary Filipino culture and the nature of onstage violence.
This 2014, Sipat Lawin Ensemble reacts to KKK with A Wake: Kids Killing Kids, Battalia Royale’s requiem. In this performance response to the response, the Ensemble remembers, retells and reenacts their Battalia experiences and devising process from end to start – from the riots over the staged deaths back to the initial steps in giving birth to a highly interactive live-action game about morality and mortality. A Wake reveals the nuances and complexities of adapting foreign content to a present and local context within the grounds of cross-cultural collaboration, and the challenges of being the biggest guinea pig to one’s own social experiment.
