Call for submissions to May Tiktik sa Bubong, May Sigbin sa Silong

Wala raw aswang sa kanilang probinsya. Iyan ang sabi ng isang kaibigang manunulat. Pero sinabi rin niyang kung makakakita ng isang lumilipad,  malamang na galing iyon sa kabilang bayan at nakikiraan lang sa kanilang lugar. Seryoso siya rito. 

Ito ang bisa ng aswang bilang imaheng matagal nang namumugad sa ating kamalayan: kaya nitong magtakda ng mga hangganan sa mundong ating nakikita upang  maitangi ang sarili (pamilya, angkan, tribo, lahi, bansa) sa iba (dayuhan, estranghero, tagalabas, kalaban). At sa ganitong paraan,  hindi nga nalalayo ang aswang at ang nasyon bilang mga konseptong mapagtangi at mapaghati.

Visceral na nilalang ang aswang. Yari sa laman at dugo at kumakain din ng laman at dugo. Kung gayon, kailangang may hiwalay siyang kategorya mula sa mga multo at elemental gaya ng duwende, kapre, at tikbalang. May aswang na lumilipad. May aswang na naglalakad. May nagsasa-ibon, aso, pusa, baboy, kabayo at kung minsan pa nga, halaman. Sari-sari ang pangontra mula asin, dasal, bawang, latigo, itak, palaspas, walis na binaligtad, hanggang sa pag-awit ng mga kantang pangsimbahan. Dahil nakaugat ang mga kaalamang  ito sa mas malalim na kolektibong alaala ng bayan, mahalagang makita ang  kaibahan ng aswang sa mga bampira at taong-lobong ipinagpapalagay na kaniyang katulad sa kanluran. Sa kabilang banda, mahalagang matukoy din naman ang paglitaw niya sa iba’t ibang anyo at katawagan mula sa iba’t ibang bahagi ng Pilipinas. Wakwak, sigbin, boroka, balbal, atbp.
