The poet Raul Rafael Ingles was born on June 14, 1929 in Manila. At the University of the Philippines, he finished with an AB Philosophy, cum laude , in 1952 and an MPA in 1956. He acquired a Certificate in Political Science and Public Administration from Carleton University in 1960. He was Professor of Journalism at the UP College of Mass Communication from 1969 until his retirement in 1989. He was also Professorial Chair holder in public relations, 1980-81 and 1984-85; in Journalism Ethics and Standards, 1982; and the Carlos P. Romulo Chair in Journalism, 1986-87. He served the University in various capacities, among these as Acting Secretary of the University and as Acting Director and Chairman of the University Press Board of management. He also served in Malacañang as Assistant Private Secretary to the President, 1954-57, and Senior Executive Assistant to the President, 1957-62. Ingles was also a Commissioner and Chairman, Communication Committee, UNESCO National Commission of the Philippines, 1987-90, and vice-president, Philippine Communication Society, 1987-90. He was a founding member and Secretary, International PEN (Philippine Chapter), a member of the UP Writers’ Club, the RAVENS Literary Fraternity, and the Philippine Writers’ Union. He was UP Writer-in-Residence, 1981-84.
Ingles was a columnist in The Manila Times from 1956 to 1972 through a daily column called “50 Years with the Times”. He edited the Literary Apprentice in 1951 and 1952, and the Philippines Communication Journal (nos. 1-6), 1986-88. He was also managing/associate editor of PC, 1950-51, Philippinensian(1952), and the Philippine Journal of Communications Studies (1972). He became the executive editor of The First 75 Years: Official History of UP (1985).
Recently, various artists collaborated to perform Ingles’ poetry. The CD, entitledPoems by Rafael , is produced by Ivory Records.
