Samar, Edgar Calabia

Edgar Calabia Samar (b. 1981) is a poet and novelist from San Pablo City, now residing in Marikina City. He has received the Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for his poetry collections (“Pag-aabang sa Kundiman at Iba Pang Tula” and “Tayong Lumalakad Nang Matulin”) and futuristic fiction (“Project: EYOD”). He has also been awarded the PBBY-Salanga Writer’s Prize for his children’s stories (“Uuwi na ang Nanay Kong si Darna!” and “Magkano Papuntang Antipolo?”), the NCCA Writer’s Prize for the Novel (“Walong Diwata ng Pagkahulog”), the Gantimpalang Collantes sa Sanaysay (“Tungo sa Pag-awit ng Inadung”), and the Gawad Surian sa Tula (“Kung Bakit Tayo Nakikinig sa Alamat”).

He finished his Ph.D. in Filipino (Malikhaing Pagsulat) at the University of the Philippines.

His latest novel, Walong Diwata ng Pagkahulog (Anvil, 2009),which was translated to English by Mikael Co and Sasha Martinez as Eight Muses of the Fall, was longlisted in the Man Asian Literary Prize 2009. His poetry book,Pag-aabang sa Kundiman: Isang Tulambuhay (Ateneo de Manila University Office of Research and Publications2006) was nominated for the National Book Award. His award-winning and much-anthologized children’s story Uuwi na ang Nanay Kong si Darna! (Adarna House, 2002) has been adapted into play by Job Pagsibigan and was staged at the Cultural Center of the Philippines as part of The Virgin Labfest in July 2008.

Samar also teaches Philippine literature and creative writing at the Ateneo de Manila University. He has presented his papers abroad, and his essays has been published in refereed journals such as Loyola Schools Review, Diliman Review and Malay . He served as president of LIRA (Linangan sa Imahen, Retorika at Anyo) in 2002-2004, and now acts as moderator of Heights and one of the advisers of Matanglawin . He currently serves as the head of the Creative Writing Desk of the Ateneo Institute of Literary Arts and Practices (AILAP). He finished his Ph.D. in Filipino (Malikhaing Pagsulat) at the University of the Philippines.

His latest book is a young adult novel from Adarna House, Janus Silang.
