MTRCB sponsors scriptwriting contest about senior citizens

The Senior Citizen Committee of MTRCB will sponsor a scriptwriting contest dealing with the theme of empowering senior citizens. Since the committee’s main concern is the image of Filipino senior citizens in film and on television, launching the said scriptwriting contest may help improve this image as well as show how senior citizens, being aware of their rights as individuals and as members of family and of society, can empower themselves and others. However, the story, for the purpose of marketability, may revolve around young people as the main characters, whose life is closely intertwined with the elderly, with their significance of the elderly underlined.

The full-length screenplay may later be produced as film or as movie for television.

Qualified contestants:
1. Any Filipino citizen, aged 18 and above, residing in the Philippines, may join the contest.
2. No employee or Board Member of the MTRCB, including their immediate family members or relatives to the second degree may join the contest (spouse, children, parents, first cousins, sister, brother, sister- and brother-in-law).

Submission of entries:
1. A contestant may submit only one entry each of a full-length screenplay on the theme of empowering senior citizens, not to exceed two (2) hours.
2. The entry should be written in spoken Filipino (Taglish allowed), double-spaced, clean and legible, on 8½” x 11” bond paper, and with one-inch margin on all sides.
3. Entries must not bear neither the author’s real name nor a pen name on any page, only the title of the full-length screenplay.
4. Instead of a pen name, the entries will be numbered.
5. Entries must be accompanied by a notarized affidavit that states that the script is original and owned by the contestant, and has never been published or produced in film or on television nor has it been previously awarded in any contest. It should not have been or should not be submitted to another contest of more or less the same period of time.
6. Enclosed in a sealed envelope, accompanying the affidavit, is the title of the screenplay, the author’s real name, address, contact numbers, and a three- to five-sentence biodata.
7. Entries may be submitted in person at the MTRCB office on 18 Timog Ave., Quezon City, and must have one (1) hard copy. Entries may also be snail-mailed or couriered, with the postmark honoring the deadline. They may also be submitted online, with the notarized affidavit scanned and sent as an image attachment, while the information on the author should be in a Word.doc file separate from that of the screenplay, with both also sent as attachments. Online submissions may be emailed to mtrcbcontest@gmail.com. Deadline for submission is at 5 pm, on Thursday, July 30, 2015.
8. Copyright shall be retained by the writer.
9. Three winners shall be awarded: P30,000 for 1st Prize; P20,000 for 2nd Prize; and P10,000 for 3rd Prize. The winners will be announced sometime in September, with the awarding ceremony taking place in October 2015.

Ang Simulain ni Deokles
Written by: Julio Garcia & Kayehl Dedeles
Directed by: Rachelle Gimpes

This play is not a musical but a play with music. It follows the story of Gilas, Ora and Deokles, the Guardians of the afterlife, as they guide the souls to be reincarnated. Deokles reads the verdict given to the souls, whilst Gilas and Ora lead them ‘down’ or ‘up’. Each souls are given another chance to live again, but their existence depends on how they lived their past life; some comes back as wealthy elites, others as low as cockroaches. Every goodwill shared counted, every sin and malice accounted. Let your soul be weighed, and be guided by the Guardians of the afterlife. You now have a hint of what you were and what you will be.

KOMIKET to hold 1st Comic Book Creator’s Workshop

MAKATI, PHILIPPINES—KOMIKET, the Filipino Komiks Market, will hold its 1st Comic Book Creator’s Workshop at Fully Booked BGC this June 2015. Open to students and professionals alike, the first batch of workshoppers will go through the komiks creation process from concept to finished work in four Sundays (June 7, 21, July 19, 26) from 2-5pm.

The lecturers are Komiket Organizers Tepai Pascual (Maktan 1521, Noodle Boy, Mark 9Verse47) and Paolo Herras (Alamat Ng Matibay, Strange Natives, Sumpa). The workshop includes insider tips on komiks production, publishing, and a survival guide to comics events and beyond.

“One of the Komiket’s objectives is to grow the komiks community. And to do that, we must discover new creators, who in turn will also bring in new readers,” Paolo says. “Some writers want to learn how to get into komiks, and are looking for an artist to collaborate with. There are also artists looking for writers. We can help connect them through the workshop,” Tepai adds.

After the workshop, the newborn creators can launch their komiks at the October 3-4 Komiket in Centris Elements, and join the Komiket Awards, or the Student Competition. The Workshop fee is P2,500. For more information, like the Komiket page on Facebook or email komiket.student@gmail.com for inquiries.

Sponsor a schoolgoer for one year with only PHP 299

Every year since 2012, our small group of friends, fulfill this dream by visiting children from the far-flung corners of the Philippines and equipping them with supplies that will aid them in the coming school year. We choose areas and communities with indigenous peoples and are economically marginalized.

We give each student a school bag with notebooks, pad paper, pens and pencils, and a pair of rubber slippers.

Over the years, we have reached almost 2000 children and we owe the success of each trip to our fellow dreamers such as yourself.

New category added to the 34th National Book Awards

The National Book Development Board (NBDB) and the Manila Critics Circle (MCC) are calling upon all NBDB-registered publishers to submit their nominations for the National Book Awards 2015.

This year, Language Studies, a special category, is the latest addition in the National Book Awards (NBA) Guidelines. As the revised rules state, “Language Studies includes dictionaries, grammars, and essays on translation, linguistics, and other language-related areas. This special category is given by Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF). The KWF is responsible for the screening process and determination of winner and awarding of the prize for the winner.”

Also, in the Literary Division, the categories are open to books in any language (published in the last calendar year), but there are special categories this year for books in Hiligaynon and Kinaray-a (published within the last three calendar years—2012-2014). As announced earlier, initial changes in the NBA 2015 rules are the addition of the Essays Category in the Literary Division and the splitting of History and Journalism into two separate categories in the Non-Literary Division. Translation, a new category added last year, covers “a book translated from one language into a Philippine language, English, or Spanish; or from one Philippine language to another Philippine language.”

To view/download a copy of the final version of the NBA 2015 rules, visit nbdb.gov.ph or click on this link: http://nbdb.gov.ph/index.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_download&gid=59&Itemid=95

Again, deadline of submission of entries is May 30, 2015. Books mailed from outside Manila will be accepted if postmarked May 30, 2015.

For queries/concerns, please send an email to Ms. Debbie Nieto at debbiednieto@nbdb.gov.ph or call (02)929-3887 local 804.
