The UP Press launched A Wanderer in the Night of the World: The Poems of NVM Gonzalez, edited by poet and critic Gemino Abad, to celebrate National Artist for Literature NVM Gonzalez’s birth centennial on September 8, Tuesday, at the UP Diliman Executive House.

Seen at the event were National Artists for Literature Bienvenido Lumbera and F. Sionil Jose. UP Diliman vice chancellor for research and development Fidel Nemenzo Jr. delivered a speech in behalf of UP Chancellor Michael Tan. Also seen were former UP president Fidel Nemenzo, award-winning writer Jose “Butch” Dalisay, first ever director of the UP Press Elmer Ordonez, current UP Press director J. Neil Garcia, and celebrated authors Gilda Cordero Fernando and Marra Lanot.

The UP Singing Ambassadors serenaded the 100-strong audience with music even as a power outage struck the campus and all dined in candlelight. Theater legend Anton Juan read poetry, Ramon Acoymo sang, and Oscar Ventanilla played the violin. College of Music dean Maureen Borromeo happily provided the piano music.

The Gonzalez family was represented by NVM’s widow Narita, and daughters Selma and Lakshmi.

The book gathers together NVM’s poems, selected writings for NVM and Narita, and the correspondence of NVM and Abad. It also features pages of intimate family photos, including one of NVM at 14 years old and his violin.

A Wanderer in the Night of the World: The Poems of NVM Gonzalez is now available at the UP Press Bookstore in UP Diliman (on E. de los Reyes St., near the police station and the College of Architecture) for PHP 250.00. The book will also be available at the mass launch of the UP Press this November at a discounted price. Visit the website at to order now.
