Established in 1908, the University of the Philippines (UP) is the country’s one and only national university. This leading institution of higher learning is a University System composed of eight constituent universities and one autonomous college spread throughout seventeen campuses across the archipelago. Home to Centers of Excellence and Centers of Development—as declared by the country’s Commission on Higher Education—the University of the Philippines is also the leading institution in gender and sexuality studies and advocacy, housing the System’s Center for Women’s and Gender Studies and individual Gender offices in all its constituent universities.
The GCRF GlobalGRACE (Global Gender and Cultures of Equality) project employs institutional research, artistic interventions, curatorial research practice and public exhibitions to investigate and enable gender positive approaches to wellbeing internationally. Working with a consortium of researchers and NGOs in the UK, Bangladesh, Brazil, Mexico, Philippines and South Africa (the latter all DAC listed), the GlobalGRACE project will:
- Disclose through collaborative arts based research practices the different ways that intersecting inequalities impact on people’s lives and wellbeing.
- Identify the variety of ways that third sector organisations internationally collaborate with artists and deploy curatorial and arts based research practice to reduce harms and enhance the wellbeing of marginalised people.
- Explore whether, and if so how, those arts based practices are used more broadly to raise public awareness about and intervene in debates about intersecting forms of gendered inequalities.
- Curate and exhibit the art discovered and produced as part of the research as means both to reflect on and assess those practices and in turn to become a key site for the production of cultures of equality internationally.
We are appointing this post for a start on 1st May 2018.

The Postdoctoral Early Career Researcher (ECR) for the Philippine Component of this Project will work under the day-to-day guidance of GlobalGRACE Work Package 4 lead Prof J. Neil C. Garcia (University of the Philippines Diliman Department of English and Comparative Literature), conducting research, facilitating translations, and performing workshop coordination and digital archiving duties and other activities to be found within Work Package 4 of the project, Making Life Lovable: Digital and Literary Productions of Cultures of Equality Among LGBT Young People in the Philippines, the aim of which is the following:
- Drawing from feminist and queer insights about the conditions of possibility for making life both livable and lovable, this package seeks to explore the ways that digital literacies and creative writing, as cultivated and enhanced in national and local Creative Writing Workshops, can be used to disclose, challenge, and artfully transfigure forms of discrimination and stigma that LGBT young people face in the Philippines, and the personal consequences of these on mental health and wellbeing.
- This package seeks to create new opportunities and prospects for bringing together and mobilising literary and creative writing practices more effectively across class and generation to enable a shift from public cultures of tolerance to that of rights and recognition.
Beyond the specific WP4 activities the ECR will be expected to work alongside the non-academic partner, Kate Ramil of YMCA San Pablo, and other GlobalGRACE team-members including: co-Directors Dr Suzanne Clisby and Dr Mark Johnson, Project Manager/Research Fellow Dr Jimmy Turner; and GlobalGRACE colleagues in all other work packages, based in Bangladesh, Brazil, Mexico, and South Africa. Throughout the 42 months of employment the ECR will be expected to travel to participate in meetings, training events, and research activities.
The duties and responsibilities outlined below are not intended to be an exhaustive list but provide guidance on the main aspects of the job. The post holder will be required to be flexible in her/his duties, including the necessity to travel regularly to GlobalGRACE partner countries throughout her/his 42 months in post:
- To make a full active research contribution both individually and in collaboration with others to the project.
- To conduct preparatory background research and ethical review for research in Work Package 4: Making Life Lovable: Digital and Literary Productions of Cultures of Equality Among LGBT Young People in the Philippines.
- To conduct life history interviews with aspiring young LGBT writers in the Philippines, as they are identified in and affirmed by the national and local LGBT Creative Writing Workshops.
- To be fully involved in the planning, organizing, and holding of the national and local LGBT Creative Writing Workshops.
- To facilitate and oversee the documentation, recording, and organizing of the outputs of these Workshops.
- Because the online archive of literary texts that will be produced by these Workshops is meant to be globally intelligible, the post holder will also be tasked to oversee if not actually inscribe the translations into English of all the Filipino manuscripts, right before they are published.
- A qualified literary and cultural studies scholar, the post holder will also be expected to participate in the planning of the lectures on Philippine LGBT aesthetics—featuring, for each year, a “craft talk” to be given by an established Filipino LGBT writer—that will take place at the beginning of each national workshop.
- The post holder will perform all the other duties expected of all researchers working for the GlobalGrace Consortium, such as publishing research outcomes in appropriate journals of international standing, and to disseminate the results of research and scholarship in other appropriate ways;
- To attend and present research findings and papers at academic and professional conferences, and to contribute to the external visibility of the project;
- To make field and other research materials available and accessible to the project team via protected shared computing facilities; and to maintain up-to-date electronic database of text, images and other media, including website news/blogs and other materials;
- To contribute, via the digital archiving of the Workshop outputs, to the ‘Virtual Global Museum of Equalities.’
- To participate in GlobalGRACE public engagement activities via social media and other channels;
- To contribute fully to the research plans developed by both the package and the overall project teams, including providing information that may be required by the Project Leadership Team (PLT) at Goldsmiths, University of London;
- To communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically (e.g. contributions to project website, draft project reports);
- To help coordinate and attend project meetings and public facing activities which will be held at six monthly intervals in London (June 2018), Brazil (Spring 2019); the Philippines (Spring 2020); and South Africa (Spring 2021);
- To participate in relevant professional duties;
- To engage in appropriate professional development;
- The post holder will be required to undertake any other duties as may reasonably be required;

- At all times to help maintain a safe working environment by participating in training as necessary and following the UP Health and Safety Codes of Practice and Policy.
