Peñaranda, Victor Jose


Victor Jose Peñaranda (Bimboy) is a poet, writer-researcher, and community development practitioner.

He has three poetry collections in English: Voyage in Dry Season (Sipat Publishing), Pilgrim in Transit (Anvil Publishing), and Lucid Lightning (UST Publishing). His works, poetry and prose, have appeared in several anthologies.

He received awards for his poetry from the Carlos Palanca Memorial Foundation for Literature (1985), Manila Critics Circle (1995), Philippine Free Press Award (2007), Unyon ng mga Manunulat sa Pilipinas (2014), and Philippines Graphic’s Nick Joaquin Literary Awards (2015).

He started writing poems in Waray, the native language of his parents, in 2014. He revived his interest in writing fiction in 2016. His fields of research are on mysticism and on local history.

His engagement in community development started in the 1980s with civil society organizations in the Philippines. He travelled to various parts of the archipelago during assignments. While working for an international development organization, he was deployed for several years in the Kingdom of Bhutan and the Republic of Macedonia.

Peñaranda was born in Manila in 1953. He is married and has three children.
