Woods, Damon

The focus of Damon L. Woods’ research deals with documents written by Filipinos in their own languages.  At present, his work has examined Tagalog documents (written by Tagalogs), as there are more of them than any other language in the Philippines, from the sixteenth through the eighteenth centuries.  While such materials may not provide us with history in the traditional sense, they are a rich resource for insights into the local inhabitants of early Spanish Philippines. They answer questions like: What categories did they use to describe themselves and others? How did their measuring and counting of things differ from those of modern times?  How did their language and culture change over time? These are questions that he had sought answer to using documents written, not by outsiders, but by the local inhabitants themselves. And the answers to these questions give us insight regarding the Tagalogs of early Spanish Philippines.
