Alvin I. Dacanay (b. 1974) is a short story writer, playwright, and editor. He finished his Mass Communication degree at Saint Joseph’s College of Quezon City in 1998 and later studied creative writing at the University of the Philippines in Diliman.
Dacanay was a fellow at the Silliman University National Writers Workshop in 2001 and the UP National Writers Workshop in 2003. He is a longtime number of The Writer’s Bloc Inc., a Manila-based group of emerging and established playwrights that is one of the organizers of the celebrated annual theater festival Virgin Labfest.
His short stories have appeared in the defunct Philippines Free Press, Philippines Graphic, Homelife,and The Sunday Times Magazine. His non-literary works—features, profiles, reviews—have appeared in The Philippine Post, Sunday Inquirer Magazine, Philippines Graphic, Philippine Chronicle, Homestyle, and Rogue.
One of Dacanay’s plays, “First Snow of November”, an adaptation of Bienvenido N. Santos’ short story “The Day the Dancers Came”, won first prize in the One-act Play category at the 2005 Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature. It was staged at the 2nd Virgin Labfest at the Cultural Center of the Philippines the following year and published in Stage Presence: The Philippine PEN Anthology of Dramain 2008.
Another play, “Eyeball”, was mounted by the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) in 2000 and later included in the National Book Award-nominated 10 X 10 X 10: Sampung Tigsasampung Minutong Dula ng Sampung Mandudulain 2004.
Dacanay was the opinion and tourism & entertainment editor of Business Mirror and entertainment and lifestyle editor of The Market Monitor. He currently works as assistant business editor of The Manila Timesand literary editor of The Sunday Times Magazine.
