The Henry Lee Irwin SJ Professorial Chair for Creative Writing Endowment Fund of the Ateneo de Manila University invites playwrights to submit works-in-progress or proposals that deal with adaptations for the stage, to the Irwin SJ Chair Creative Writing Workshop for Playwriting.
This year’s Irwin SJ Professorial Chair holder, award-winning playwright Rodolfo “Rody” Vera, will conduct the workshop on March 2, 9, 30, and April 6, 2019.
Ten (10) competitive fellowships are at stake—six (6) for students or members of the Ateneo de Manila community and four (4) for the general public.
The four-Saturday workshop focuses on adapting materials (foreign or local) for the Filipino stage. Vera will discuss adapting for theater, drawing on his own experience, as well as on the practices of other artists in Philippine contemporary theater. He will then guide participants in writing their own play adaptations using their materials of choice, whether fiction (a novel or a short story), film, a graphic novel, another play (foreign or Filipino), or even fragments of biographies, memoirs, etc.
Vera has been writing for Philippine theater for the past three decades. He is also an actor, theater director, and dramaturg. Among the highest accolades he has received are the Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature Hall of Fame, the Gawad Pambansang Alagad ni Francisco Balagtas from the Unyon ng mga Manunulat sa Pilipinas, and the Gawad Tanglaw ng Lahi from the Ateneo de Manila. He is currently the executive director of The Writer’s Bloc Inc., and committee member and co-founder of the annual Virgin Labfest.
