Attention, alumni of the UP National Writers’ Workshop! The Likhaan: UP Institute of Creative Writing, in partnership with the University of the Philippines Press, is calling for book translation manuscripts to be part of its 2021 lineup of publications for the Philippine Writers Series. This call is open to former fellows and panelists of the UP National Writers’ Workshop, the Amelia Lapeña-Bonifacio Writers Workshop, and the Philippine LGBTQ Writers Workshop.

The Philippine Writers Series (PWS) facilitates the publication of the works of fellows and workshop alumni of the UP ICW emerging from its various programs, particularly from its flagship UP National Writers’ Workshop as it has been redesigned for writers in mid-career (i.e. previously published writers). As an institute dedicated to the sustained development of Philippine literature, the UP ICW has a track record in nurturing writers who have shaped Philippine literature, including providing support for innovations in literary forms and genres, responding to the needs of writers, and engaging with the material realities of writing practice. Within this purview, the PWS assists in expediting the publication of the works of its fellows and alumni and proudly presents them to the reading public in the service of literature for national and social development.

Manuscripts may be in any genre or language, provided that it is, foremost, a literary work in English or Filipino.  For those submitting in another language, this must have a translation in English or Filipino and will be considered for the Philippine Translators Series, the guidelines to follow. They must not have been submitted to another publisher for consideration. The manuscript should not be a best-of or selections from the writer’s already book-published works. Manuscripts must also include at least a ten-page introduction. Those who have submitted in the past calls are encouraged to resubmit their revised manuscript. Upon screening, a shortlist of submissions will be endorsed by the UP Institute of Creative Writing to undergo the requisite double blind review process of the UP Press.

Accepted contributors will receive an honorarium of P10,000 gross of tax.

Workshop alumni are requested to submit their manuscripts on or before March 31, 2021 to [email protected] with a brief project description, a 150-word biographical note, and a current photograph of the author. Please use the following subject heading for the email submission:
