Araw-araw, Gabi-gabi: Mga Literary Zine sa ARTS 1 ng UPLB (2018)

 

Paano ba nararanasan ang umaga, hapon, at gabi sa Unibersidad ng Pilipinas Los Baños (UPLB)?

Ipinakikilala ang mga zine na sinasagot ang mga tanong na ito. Likha ito ng mga estudyante ng UPLB mula sa klase ng ARTS 1. Bunga ng eksperimentasyon at kumbensiyon ang mga zine na mababasa ninyo dito.

Nagmula ang lahat sa isang proyekto ng paglilitrato na pumapaksa sa mga eksena, hitsura, hugis, at iba’t iba pang anyo na makikita sa bawat bahagi ng isang araw sa UPLB.

Masugid na hinarap ng mga piling estudyante ng ARTS 1 (mula sa Section B1, G3, Y3, at Z4) ang hamon na lumikha ng mga akda na kinakausap o tumutugon sa mga retrato. Hindi madali ang naging proseso subalit maski pa man ganun, nakabuo sila ng mga akda na maituturing na kabahagi na rin ng kamalayan at alaala ng UPLB.

Higit pa sa proyektong pangklase ang naging tunguhin nitong paglikha ng mga zine. Malay ang mga umakda sa proseso ng paglikha at mga konsepto sa sining. Lumabas sila ng klasrum at kinilala ang kanilang kapaligiran. May pumaksa ng mga manggagawa ng UPLB sa umaga, mga batang obrero sa dapithapon, mga babaeng hindi makatulog sa gabi, mga bulaklak na hindi natin nakikilala ang mga pangalan, mga eksena sa Freedom Park, mga eksena ng kahirapan, at marami pang iba. Malay sila sa limang katangiang pansining na tinukoy ni John Berger: ang piguratibong representasyon, pagpili ng paksa at konteksto kung saan ito nakalagay, paggalang sa materyal na ginamit, maanyong pagkakaugnay-ugnay at pagtitimpi, at pagkamangha (“White Bird”).

Pinatutunayan na kahit man nasa Siyensiya ang kanilang mga kurso ay hindi sila nakukulong lamang doon. Naipakita nila ang mataas na pagpapahalaga din sa Humanidades bilang isang larangan. Hindi masasabi na likha ito ng mga estudyanteng mula sa Agriculture, Biology, Chemistry, Development Communication, Engineering, Economics, Mathematics, o Statistics dahil sari-sari ang pakaranasan na kanilang ipinakikita sa mga zine.

Pahiwatig ang mga zine na hindi namamatay ang pag-akda ng panitikan sa UPLB. Ipinakikilala nito na may halaga at espasyo pa rin ang panitikan maski man sa isang lunan na hitik sa positibismo at siyentipikong pagtingin sa mundo. Sa panahong pinapatay ng namamayaning mga institusyon ang Filipino at Panitikan, nais kong ibahagi itong mga akda bilang pananda na magpapatuloy ang mga manunulat at manlilikha kahit sikilin ito sa kolehiyo.

Sapagkat ang mga zine ay hindi na lamang nilikha ng mga estudyante ng Siyensiya para sa kanilang sarili. Iniaalay nila ito sa mga tao na kanilang nakasalamuha. Mula sa kanilang mga personal na naranasan sa paglilitrato hanggang sa pag-akda ng mga tula o kuwento, hindi matatawaran na mahuhusay rin na artista ng bayan ang mga siyentista ng bayan.

UP Writers Night 2018 to celebrate UP ICW’s 40th year

In celebration of the 40th year of UP ICW, Grand Homecoming of Fellows from the UP Writers Workshop

As part of its 40th anniversary, the LIKHAAN: UP Institute of Creative Writing (ICW) will hold UP Writers Night, a yearly gathering that pays homage to both the country’s established and up-and-coming writers. The grand homecoming will feature three major events, all taking place on November 23, 2018 at the University Hotel, University of Philippines – Diliman.

The celebration begins with the awarding ceremonies for the 18th Madrigal-Gonzalez Best First Book Award (MGBFBA), to be held from 2:30-4:00 PM. The finalists for this year are: Emiliana Kampilan for Dead Balagtas, Tomo 1: Mga Sayaw ng Dagat at Lupa, Bong Redila for Meläg, Vijae Alquisola for Sa Mga Pansamantala, and Liza Magtoto for Bienvenida de Soltera. The judges are Romulo P. Baquiran, Jr., Allan Popa, and Joselito Delos Reyes.

Registration and dinner is at 6 PM. This will be followed by the launch of Likhaan Journal 12, the annual journal of contemporary Philippine literature published by the UP ICW. This year’s issue editor is Eugene Evasco. UP ICW will also be launching a commemorative anthology celebrating the 40th anniversary of the institution. This special volume is titled Likhaan 40@40, edited by Jose Dalisay, Jr.

The Writers Night Homecoming program will feature recollections by former ICW directors and performances by workshop alumni Jess Santiago, Nerisa del Carmen Guevara, Sandra Roldan, and Bernardo Aguay, Jr., as well as special performances by folk singer-songwriter Joey Ayala and activist-rapper BLKD. Books and zines from different publishers and individuals, such as Anvil Publishing, XU Press, and Balangay Books, will also be sold at the event.

Everyone is invited. Admission is free. There will be special limited edition items to be given away to our guests.

Call for Applications for 2018 Davao Writers Workshop

The Davao Writers Guild is now accepting applications to the 2018 Davao Writers Workshop to be held on November 14-18, 2018.

 

Fifteen (15) fellowships are available, five (5) of which will be given to writers from outside Davao City but limited to residents living in Mindanao.

 

Applications are for the following genres: short fiction, poetry, essay, and play. They may be in English, Tagalog, or Binisaya. Entries should either contain 2 short stories (1,000 to 5,000 words), 2 essays (1,000 to 5,000 words), 2 one-act plays, or 5 poems.

 

Entries must be the applicants’ original works and should have not been accepted to another writers workshop or included in a creative writing thesis. Applicants should be a resident of Davao City or any part of Mindanao. Applicants should have not been an alumnus of the previous Davao Writers Workshop or a fellow to any of the national writers workshops. Accepted fellows will be given free board and lodging for the duration of the workshop.

1) Fill out the Application Form.

2) Secure a signed Certification Form.

3) Secure the electronic copy (.doc, .docx, or .rtf file) of the manuscript. Kindly include all entries in one document, and name your document as “[Last Name]_Manuscript for 2018DWW”.

Language Studies Lecture Series

The PUP Center for Language and Literature Studies (PUP-CLLS) under the PUP Office of the Vice President for Research, Extension and Development (OVPRED) will be holding a “Language Studies Lecture Series” on August 31, 2018 from 8:00am to 5:00pm at the Bonifacio Bonifacio Hall, NALLRC, PUP Main Campus, Sta. Mesa, Manila.

The lecture is FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. The lecturer in the morning session is Dr. Rhoderick Nuncio, Professor from the Department of Filipino, De La Salle University will discuss the topic “Pagdalumat-salita Tungo sa Higit na Intelektuwalisasyon ng Kaalamang Filipino.” In the afternoon session two lectures will be delivered. Prof. John Venson Villareal from the Department of Linguistics, University of the Philippines Diliman will discuss the topic “Ang Wika Bilang Salamin ng Kaisipan ng Tao: Isang Pambungad sa Linggwistik na Analisis” and Prof. Alvin Ortiz from the Kagawaran ng Filipinolohiya, Polytechnic University of the Philippines will discuss “Bantang Dulot sa Wikang Filipino ng Multilingguwalismo sa Panahon ng Federalismo: Isang Pagdalumat”

Guillermo, Ramon

Ramon Guillermo is professor of Philippine Studies at the Dept. of Filipino and Philippine Literature, University of the Philippines – Diliman. He is the author of the novel “Ang Makina ni Mang Turing” (University of the Philippines Press, 2013) and translator into Filipino of Water Benjamin’s “Über den Begriff der Geschichte“ / “Hinggil sa Konsepto ng Kasaysayan” (High Chair Press, 2013). His most recently published scholarly work is “3 Baybayin Studies” (University of the Philippines Press, 2017).

In celebration of National Women’s Month and International Women’s Day, the Philippine Center of International PEN (Poets and Playwrights, Essayists, Novelists) will feature Alice Sun Cua, Mookie Katigbak-Lacuesta, and Che Sarigumba on March 24, 5:30 p.m., at the Solidaridad Bookshop, Manila.

The authors will talk about their latest books and signed copies.

Sun Cua’s latest book is “Kissing through a Handkerchief and Other Travel Tales” (University of Santo Tomas Publishing, 2017). A practicing obstetrician-gynecologist, she writes travel essays and is also a poet and translator.

Katigbak-Lacuesta’s latest poetry collection is “Hush Harbor” (University of Santo Tomas Publishing, 2017). She has won prizes from the Don Carlos Palanca Awards, Philippines Free Press Award, and Philippines Graphic Nick Joaquin Awards. In 2015, she completed a residence with the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa, United States.

Sarigumba’s book is her novel “Puso pa rin ang Nagpasiya” (Vee Press, 2016) which bagged the first prize at the story writing contest of the National Book Development Board. She has served as Travel and Lifestyle editor of Pilipino Mirror for five years, and is a literary reviewer in Filipino at the Philippines Graphic.
