AHA Concert Series Season 2 Opens with “Back Home with Mr. C and Friends” Performance

The UP College of Music (UPCMu) will begin its first concert of the AHA Concert Series Season 2 on September 1, 2018 at 7:00 p.m., Abelardo Hall Auditorium, UP College of Music.

“Back Home with Mr. C and Friends” will feature Mr. Ryan Cayabyab, Prof. Tony Maigue, and Ms. Kit Viguilla Navarro.  Known as Mr. C by his fans, Maestro Ryan Cayabyab is a multifaceted musician being a composer, arranger, music director, and conductor. As an alumnus, he also taught composition and theory class.

Performing with Cayabyab is Prof. Antonio Maigue, the country’s premier flutist who has performed six times with the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra as soloist. Presently, he chairs the Winds and Percussion Department of the UP College of Music. Meanwhile, Ms. Kit Viguilla Navarro is a renowned soprano who played the role of Maria Clara in Ryan Cayabyab’s Noli Me Tangere: The Musical. She has guest appearances and opera performances in the US, Switzerland, and Austria.

The opening concert will also feature the talented tenor and Filipino pop-opera singer, Mr. Jonathan Badon who is dubbed as the “Prince of Popera.”  Mr. Giancarlo Gonzales, a gifted young cellist completes this ensemble of musical luminaries.

The concert series is a fundraising campaign of the UP College of Music to renovate and upgrade the Abelardo Hall Auditorium (AHA) so it can be a world-class performance venue for the musical and artistic talents from the UPCMu. By offering quality and diverse programs, it aims to establish the AHA as a hub of culture not only for the University of the Philippines but for the greater community as well.

Talk on Pop Music Education from Joey Ayala

The Philippine Society for Music Education (PSME) in cooperation with the Music Education Department of the UP College of Music and the UP Junior Music Educators’ Guild (JMEG) will hold a lecture series on “Pop Music Education” with Mr. Joey Ayala as guest speaker. The talk will be held on August 31, 2018, 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Abelardo Hall Auditorium, UP College of Music. Admission is free and open to the public.

First Edel Garcellano Conference on Literary and Cultural Studies ilulunsad

Elmer Ordoñez’s fictionized biography to be launched, Aug. 4

Renowned literary critic, essayist and fictionist Elmer Ordóñez will launch his latest book, Father’s Doppleganger, August 4, Saturday, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the Popular Bookstore, Tomas Morato St. (cor Timog avenue), Quezon City.

Ordóñez said the book is his fictionized biography. “The book takes the reader to the turn of the 20th century during the Filipino-American war, the beginnings of benevolent assimilation, the Thomasites, the early migrant workers and their struggles in America, public education in English, the struggle of a working student, the return of Filipino pensionados, the war years, post war Manila, to the legacy left by the main character. A kind of social history, told plainly,” Ordóñez said in his Facebook post.

Advanced copies are now available at Popular Bookstore.

Also available at the launch is Red Poppies on the Road published earlier by Pantas, c/o Julie Po of Popular Bookstore.

Other fiction books published by Ordoñez include Sitting in the Moonlight and Other Stories, Snows of Yesteryears: A Family in War and a Sentimental Education.

He also authored essays such as Emergent Literature: Essays on Philippine Writing and The Other View: Notes on Philippine Writing and Culture, among others.

He has been professor of English, associate for literary criticism at the UP Creative Writing Center, and chairperson for projects of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.

Journalist to launch first poetry book, Aug. 4

Raymund B. Villanueva of alternative media outfit Kodao Productions will launch his first book of poems titled Persolitika on Aug. 4, Saturday, 7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at Conspiracy Garden Cafe in Quezon City.

In his Facebook post, Villanueva said the poems were written in a span of 25 years. He started writing poems when he was still a student journalist at San Beda College. His love for literature grew stronger when he met his colleagues at the College Editors Guild of the Philippines (CEGP). Together, they held poetry readings and critiqued their own works.

Villanueva is also the deputy secretary general of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP). Most of his poems are hinged on current events.

The book launch is part of the “If Art is a Hammer: Presentation Series” organized by the Concerned Artists of the Philippines (CAP).

After the book launch, Pukpukan Na! Martilyo Sessions will follow featuring poet and folk singer Jess Santiago and Plagpul.

Book Talakayan: The Quiet Ones

Pinoy Reads Pinoy Books, in cooperation with Ateneo University Press, invites you to this month’s Book Talakayan: The Quiet Ones on July 21 2018, Saturday, 1 – 5 p.m. at SGD Coffee, Maginhawa, Quezon City.

The Quiet Ones is a novel written by Glenn Diaz. It won the 2017 Palanca Grand Prize for Novel.

Diaz is an instructor with the Department of English at the Ateneo de Manila University. He is a recipient of the M Literary Residency at Sangam House in Bangalore, India, among other fellowships.

This event is FREE and open to public.

The 35th National Children’s Book Day

Children of all ages are invited to the celebration of the 35th National Children’s Book Day (NCBD) on July 17, 2018 (Tuesday) at the Main Theater Lobby of the Cultural Center of the Philippines from 9:00am to 5:00pm with the theme Sa Aklat May Laya.

Held every 3rd Tuesday of July, the NCBD highlights the best works of children’s book writers, illustrators, and publishers, and celebrates the importance of nurturing the young readers’ curiosity and imagination.

The event’s morning program consists of the awarding ceremonies for the 2018 PBBY (Philippine Board on Books for Young People)-Salanga Prize, 2018 PBBY-Alcala Prize, 2018 PBBY Wordless Book Prize, and the 2018 National Children’s Book Awards.

Towards the end of the morning, the PBBY Sa Aklat, May Laya Exhibit will be launched as well, featuring artworks related to the PBBY-Alcala Prize. This is derived from the children’s stories that won the PBBY-Salanga Prize, Becky Bravo’s work entitled “May Alaga Akong Bakulaw.” The exhibit is free and open from July 17 to 22, 2018 at the CCP Little Theater Lobby.

At 1:30 pm, My CCP Tour activity will commence at Little Theater Lobby led by the CCP Arts Education Department. This will be followed by free sessions on storytelling, arts and crafts and music and movement prepared by the Pinoy Kids Read Pinoy Books group for children at the Main Theater Lobby at 3:00 pm.

As the second part of the NCBD celebration, the PBBY stages Salaysayan 2018, the 2nd Storytelling Festival at Museo Pambata with emphasis on Read Aloud as a strategy to bring to life books and the written word.  The Salaysayan will run from 1:00pm-4:00pm. On July 21, the PBBY, together with Kasingkasing Press and Hubon Manunulat, brings the NCBD to Iloilo through workshops on book design and illustration to be held at Cinematheque Centre Iloilo, and a series of talks on children’s literature at the UP Visayas. Wikang Filipino: Wika ng Paglikha, Paglingkod sa Kapwa Buwan ng Wika 2018 sa Unibersidad ng Pilipinas, Diliman

Ang Sentro ng Wikang Filipino – UP Diliman, sa suporta ng UP Opisina ng Pangulo at Opisina ng Tsanselor ng UP Diliman, at sa pakikipagtulungan ng Alliance of Concerned Teachers – Philippines, Save Our Schools-UP Diliman, UP Main Library, at  DZUP ay magdaraos ng iba’t ibang aktibidad kaugnay ng pagdiriwang ng Buwan ng Wika 2018 sa UP Diliman na may temang Wikang Filipino: Wika ng Paglikha, Paglingkod sa Kapwa. Layunin ng tema ngayong taon na itampok ang ambag ng wikang Filipino tungo sa paglikha ng mga anyo ng sining at silbi nito sa pagpapaunlad ng kaalaman sa mga sektor panlipunan at pamayanan. Magkakaroon ng palihan, paglulunsad ng mga bagong publikasyon, at eksibit para sa kabuuan ng pagdiriwang ng Buwan ng Wika 2018.

Palihan sa Pagsulat ng awit, rap, tula at pagkuha ng larawan

Para sa taong ito, magkakaroon ng magkakasabay na palihan sa iba’t ibang larangan partikular ng pagsulat ng awit at rap, pagtula at pagkuha ng larawan na gaganapin sa Agosto 17-18, 2018 sa University Hotel, UP Diliman. Magiging kalahok dito ang mga piling guro mula sa mataas na paaralang pampubliko sa Lungsod Quezon sa pakikipag-ugnayan sa Alliance of Concerned Teachers-Philippines at Quezon City Public Schools Teachers Association (QCPSTA). Bawat palihan ay magkakaroon ng tagapagsalita at tagapagpadaloy na may layuning paigtingin ang kakayahan at kaalaman ng mga guro na makagawa ng awit, rap, tumula, at kumuha ng larawan pagkatapos ng dalawang araw na palihan.

Paglulunsad at Pagbebenta ng mga aklat sa mababang halaga

Isasagawa ang paglulunsad ng mga bagong publikasyon ng SWF-UPD sa Agosto 28, 2018, kabilang ang pinakabagong isyu ng Daluyan: Journal ng Wikang Filipino. Ilulunsad din ang bagong website ng SWF-UPD at ang proyektong  e-bahagi na nagtatampok sa Aklatang Bayan Online, isang proyektong publikasyong digital na may libreng akses para sa lahat. Magkakaroon din ng pagbebenta ng mga aklat ng SWF-UPD sa mas mababang halaga bilang bahagi ng pagdiriwang sa buong Agosto 2018.

Eksibit at Sanib-salita

Kasabay ng paglulunsad ang pagbubukas ng eksibit para sa mga likhang sining ng mga kalahok sa palihan. Samantala, ang sanib-salita nama’y paglalagay ng mga tarp palibot sa academic oval na naglalaman ng mga pinagsanib na salita upang makabuo ng bagong kahulugan.

Ang Sentro ng Wikang Filipino-UP Diliman (SWF-UP Diliman) ay akademikong institusyon sa ilalim ng Opisina ng Tsanselor ng UP Diliman na nagtataguyod sa wikang Filipino bilang midyum ng pagtuturo, saliksik at publikasyon, at opisyal na komunikasyon ayon sa tadhana ng Konstitusyong 1987, Artikulo XIV, seksiyon 6 at 7.
