Kasingkasing Press, Aklat Alamid to launch children’s fiction contest

Expect more contemporary writers in regional languages to gain more platform in the next few years.

Two book publishing labels advocating for the use of native languages in West Visayan children’s literature have recently tied up to hold the first Aliwanag: Short Story for Children Writing Contest. Spearheaded by Kasingkasing Press and Aklat Alamid, the literary competition aims to foster creative writing in Hiligaynon, Kinaray-a and Aklanon for young readers in line with the Department of Education’s recent implementation of using the mother tongue as a medium of instruction in elementary schools nationwide as part of its K-12 program.

The contest is open to all fictionists who write in any West Visayan language, preferably for children aged 6-9 years old (Kindergarten to Grade 3). There will be separate categories for Hiligaynon, Kinaray-a and Aklanon. Participating authors may submit multiple entries provided that they have never been previously published or recognized. One winner will be declared for each language category along with a cash prize of PHP 5,000.00 and a book publication offer from Kasingkasing Press and Aklat Alamid.

Calls for submission are currently ongoing. Participants are advised to submit their entries online via email signed by their pen name along with a separate document containing their real name, complete address, contact information and short literary resume to kasingkasingpress@yahoo.com no later than 30 July 2017.
