Call for Applications: 2016 Davao Writers Workshop

The Davao Writers Guild is now accepting applications to the 2016 Davao Writers Workshop to be held on October 22, 2016 to October 26, 2016.

Fifteen (15) fellowships are available, five (5) of which will be given to writers from outside Davao City but limited to residents of Mindanao.

Applications are for the following genres: short fiction, poetry, essay, and play. They may be in English, Tagalog, and/or Binisaya. Entries should contain 2 short stories (1,000 to 5,000 words), 2 essays (1,000 to 5,000 words), 2 one-act plays, or 5 poems.

Entries must be the applicants’ original works and should have not been accepted to another writers workshop or included in a creative writing thesis. Applicants should be a resident of Davao City or any part of Mindanao. Applicants should have not been an alumnus of the previous Davao Writers Workshop or a fellow to any of the national writers workshops. Accepted fellows will be given free board and lodging for the duration of the workshop.

Applicants are to fill out the application form, sign the certification form, and attach the electronic copy (.doc, .docx, or .rtf file) of the manuscript. Send to davaowritersworkshop[at]gmail[dot]com with subject: “DWW2016 Submission”. Deadline for submission is September 16, 2016.

Fellows chosen for the 54th Silliman University National Writers Workshop slated for May 11—29

The 54th edition of the Silliman University National Writers Workshop is slated to start on 11 May 2015 at the Rose Lamb Sobrepeña Writers Village in Camp Look-out, Valencia, Negros Oriental.
 
Twelve writers from all over the Philippines have been accepted as regular workshop fellows.
 
The fellows for poetry are Aimee Paulette O. Cando of Quezon City (University of Santo Tomas), Angela Gabriele R. Fabunan of Olongapo City (University of the Philippines—Diliman), Darylle Luzarita Rubino of Polomolok, South Cotabato (University of the Philippines—Mindanao), and Mohammad Nassefh R. Macla of Davao City (University of the Philippines in Mindanao).

The fellows for fiction are Luis Manuel Diores of Cebu City (University of San Carlos), Patricia Corazon F. Lim of Quezon City (Ateneo de Manila University), Kristine Abelink Patenio of Murcia, Negros Occidental (University of St. La Salle in Bacolod), and Rodolfo Eduardo T. Santiago of Quezon City (Ateneo de Manila University).

The fellows for creative nonfiction are Jona Branzuela Bering of Cebu City (Cebu Normal University), Rowena Rose M. Lee of Manila (University of the Philippines in Mindanao), Miguel Antonio Lizada of Davao City (National University of Singapore), and Edmark Tejarcio Tan of Quezon City (University of Santo Tomas).

Khail Campos Santia of Malaybalay, Bukidnon (Silliman University) will join them as a special fellow for poetry. The names of other special fellows from around the Asia-Pacific region will be announced later.

Four alternates have also been chosen in case any of the regular fellows declines the invitation: Christian Jil R. Benitez of San Mateo, Rizal (Ateneo de Manila University) for poetry, Edmond Julian Y. Dela Cerna of Davao City (San Pedro College) and Matthew Jacob F. Ramos of Cebu City (Ateneo de Manila University) for fiction, and Fritzie D. Rodriguez of Balaga City, Bataan (University of the Philippines—Diliman) for creative nonfiction.

Three applicants have also been invited to sit as special workshop mentees, including Ana Joaquina Adriano of Dumaguete City (Enderun College), Silvin Federic Real Maceren of Cebu City (Silliman University), and Chuckie Perez Manio of Bacolod City (Silliman University).

The panel of writers/critics for this year will also be announced later.

The workshop, which traditionally lasts for three weeks, is the oldest creative writing workshop of its kind in Asia. It was founded in 1962 by S.E.A. Write Awardee Edilberto K. Tiempo and National Artist Edith L. Tiempo, and was recently given the Tanging Parangal in the Gawad CCP Para sa Sining by the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

Call for applications to KRITIKA 2015 Fellowships

The Bienvenido N. Santos Creative Writing Center of De La Salle University (DLSU) is inviting young critics and scholars to apply for fellowship to KRITIKA 2015 National Workshop on Art and Cultural Criticism.This workshop will be held on May 4 – 7, 2015 at the University of San Agustin (USA), Iloilo City, West Visayas. Distinguished critic and professor Rolando B. Tolentino is workshop director.

KRITIKA is envisioned to give young scholars who want to commit themselves to art criticism a forum where they could discuss their work and concerns with established art critics in the country. The workshop focuses on critical writing in the following arts and cultural practice: literature, architecture, theatre, film, dance, music, visual arts, multi-art, and popular culture. For 2015, a fellowship will be given to food writing/criticism.

Ten (10) applicants will be chosen for the fellowships, which include transportation stipend and board and lodging.

This workshop is co-hosted by USA Fray Luis De Leon Creative Writing Center and the USA Graduate School, and supported by the DLSU Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.

Manuscript should be an unpublished critical essay on any of the following arts and cultural practice: literature, architecture, film, music, theatre and performing arts, visual arts, multi-art, popular culture, and gastronomy. It should be on work by Filipino artist/s. A study may choose to examine more than one art form. Manuscripts in a regional language (e.g., Cebuano, Hiligaynon) are welcome (must be accompanied by an abstract in English or Filipino, or a translated version in English or Filipino).

A sample publication should be a critical essay which appeared in a journal, periodical or anthology.

Workshop on Teaching Climate Change Impact to be held in the Visayas and Mindanao

 “Towards a Green Education in the Philippines: Workshops on Teaching the Environment and Climate Change Impacts in the New General Education Curriculum” will be held on 20-21 June 2014 at La Salle University (LSU), Ozamiz City, Misamis Occidental, and 27-28 June 2014 at the University of San Agustin (USA), Iloilo City.

Through colloquia/provocations, workshops, and complementary performances, this project seeks to promote interdisciplinary approaches to nature and the environment. It hopes to gather together teachers/educators, scholars, artists, researchers and social practitioners in the region, providing them a forum to discuss ideas and strategies on the conduct of environmental engagement in the classrooms of higher education institutions.

Its two-fold aim is (a) to encourage the core courses of the New General Education Curriculum (CMO No. 20-s2013) to re-examine our vital connections to people, cultures, and places beyond the walls of the school, and (b) to transform the learners of today into critical mass and innovative forces that work together towards a green, productive, and sustainable future. The Metro Manila leg took place on 24-26 October 2013 at De La Salle University (DLSU), Manila.  

Resource speakers will deliver provocations and challenges in the morning sessions while the afternoon sessions will be devoted to an action program workshop. The main outcome will be modules and resource materials proposing pedagogical innovations which underscore environmental engagement.

This project is organized by the DLSU Office of the Associate Vice Chancellor for Faculty Resources and Development, the Bienvenido N. Santos Creative Writing Center (BNSCWC), and the Behavioral Sciences Department, and sponsored by the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia. DLSU’s partners include the LSU Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academics, the USA Graduate School, and the USA Institutional and Special Projects Office.

Educators, environmentalists, and interested parties are welcome to attend the workshop. There is no registration fee. Participants have to take care of their own travel arrangements, accommodation and meals.

74th National Student Press Convention and 37th Biennial Student Press Congress scheduled for May 19 to 23

The College Editors Guild of the Philippines, the oldest, broadest and only-existing alliance of tertiary student publications in the Philippines and Asia-Pacific region, will hold its 74th National Student Press Convention (NSPC) and 37th Biennial Student Press Congress on May 19-23, 2014 at St. Francis Xavier Regional Major Seminary of Mindanao, Seminary Road, Brgy. Catalunan Grande, Davao City with the theme: “Dasig Manunuwat: Uniting Campus Journalists for Genuine Press Freedom and Social Change.”

The NSPC will provide lectures and workshops on basic, intermediate and advanced journalism skills. Likewise, trainings on different literary genres will be given. And as part of the Guild’s 82 years of dedication in educating student journalists regarding the plight of the country, various socio-political discussions will also be featured.

Also, the following awards will be given to outstanding publications:

15th GAWAD Ernesto Rodriguez Jr.

Named after CEGP President Emeritus Ernesto Rodriguez Jr., Gawad ERJ is the search for outstanding student publications in the country. The contest has two categories: major (tabloid, broadsheet, magazine,) and minor (website, alternative form, literary folio). In the major category, a publication may join only one form. In the minor category, a publication may join all the forms.

10th GAWAD Beng Hernandez 

In honor of the dedication of martyred CEGP Vice President for Mindanao Benjaline “Beng” Hernandez in protecting and promoting human rights, Gawad Beng is the award given to the publication with an exemplary program on human rights. Beng, who also worked as a human rights volunteer, was murdered by CAFGU while conducting a fact-finding mission at Arakan Valley, Cotabato on April 5, 2002. In this award, a particular program on human rights accompanied by photos, narrative report or video is to be judged (you can use any of these materials).

34th GAWAD Marcelo H. del Pilar

Gawad MHDP is the highest citation given by the Guild to its outstanding alumni.

In this regard, we are inviting your student publication to the 74th NSPC. The registration fee is P3,300.00 per delegate inclusive of food, lodging and kit for the duration of the event. Early bird registration is until May 10, 2014 with a discounted registration fee of P3,200.00. Delegates are advised to pay the fare for the Basic Masses Integration (Classroom Discussion 1 – The Social Panorama: Understanding the Marginalized Sectors) which costs P100.00 per delegate.

53rd UP National Writers Workshop now accepting applications (repost)

LIKHAAN: The University of the Philippines Institute of Creative Writing (UP ICW) is now accepting applications for the 53rd UP National Writers Workshop to be held in Baguio City on 13-20 April 2014.

Here are the submission guidelines:

QUALIFICATIONS

To qualify, applicants (1) must be writers in English or Filipino; (2) must have attended at least one creative writing workshop (national/regional, including the UP National Writers Workshops), or earned a degree in Creative Writing/Malikhaing Pagsulat, or won at least one national/international literary award; (3) must have published at least one book of poetry, fiction, nonfiction or drama, or have had a full-length play or a film produced. Writers who have been fellows at any of the UP National Writers Workshops are eligible. Some of these qualifications may be waived in exceptionally meritorious cases, with the unanimous concurrence of the UP ICW Fellows, Associates, and Advisers.

 

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must submit (1) five copies plus digital file (12 points, double-spaced, 8 x 11) of one original unpublished manuscript (short story, poem, creative nonfiction, play, or novel) to be discussed during the workshop—this manuscript should not have been submitted to a publishing house or any other workshop, and should form at least 20% of a book project in progress; (2) five copies plus digital file (12 points, double-spaced, 8 x 11) of an essay on “What I write, how, and why?” in relation to the work in progress. Davao Writers Workshop 2013 now accepting applications

The Davao Writers Guild, in cooperation with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and UP Mindanao, will hold a Writers Workshop on October 15 to 19, 2012. Deadline for application is September 21, 2013.

Who may apply:

Fifteen writing fellows will be selected for the workshop. Applicants must be residents of Davao and Mindanao.

Only two slots are allotted to fellows within Mindanao but residing outside Davao. They will receive transportation allowance of up to P1,000.

Fellows will receive free board and lodging for the duration of the workshop.

Past fellows of the Davao Writers Workshop, as well as of national writers workshops, are not eligible to apply for this regional workshop.

Categories:
We will accept submissions in four categories: fiction, essay, poetry and one-act play. They may be in English, Bisaya, or Tagalog. Applicant portfolios must therefore contain:

  • 2 short stories (1,000 words to 5,000 words); or
  • 2 essays (1,000 words to 5,000 words); or
  • 2 one-act plays (10 minutes to 30 minutes play time); or
  • 5 poems

All entries must be original works by the applicant.

NCCA to conduct tracer study of alumni of writing workshops

To the Writing Fellows of the NCCA-funded writers workshops, regional and national, from 1994 to 2010 based in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao: The National Commission for Culture and Arts-National Committee on Literary Arts (NCCA-NCLA) is glad to inform you that it is conducting a Tracer Study of all Alumni of writers workshops funded by the NCCA from 1994 to 2010.
