Kritika Kultura, the international refereed journal of language, literary, and cultural studies of the Department of English, Ateneo de Manila University—in cooperation with the Rizal Library, Fine Arts Program, and Ateneo Institute of Literary Arts and Practices (AILAP)—will be hosting craft talks and readings by Raymond John de Borja and Tilde Acuña. The event will be on Mar. 2, 2015, 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., at 4/f new Rizal Library, Ateneo de Manila University.
De Borja’s talk, titled “A Possible Line,” will be on sincerity, persons, and the experience of time and of place as they compose and are composed through his recent essays, poems, and collage work. The talk includes a discussion on previously published work along with pieces from two ongoing projects tentatively titled “Work” and “Notes for Film Music.”
Acuña will be reading selections from his works Pseudocuments (2013), nihil vers (2014), and its Motors in service (a work-in-progress), along with other selections from previous projects, in order to trace how his practice of obliterating texts evolved from an ekphrastic, quasi-artistic play; to collaborative reflections on layers of meaning-making; and to critical interrogations of ridiculously reactionary documents. The craft talk will discuss the process of defacement via erasure, and how the product of such an act implies certain truths that the source text ironically covers up—incidentally or otherwise.
Raymond de Borja’s first book they day daze was published by High Chair. Some of his recent works are published in Book Watch, Transit, High Chair, Lemonhound, HTML Giant, and Kritika Kultura.
Tilde Acuña (Arbeen Regalado Acuña) is an MA Araling Pilipino student at the University of the Philippines-Diliman. He received a BA Communication Arts degree (cum laude) from UP-Los Baños, and fellowships to three national writing workshops (IYAS, KRITIKA, CCWW). His visual and literary works have been anthologized or published in Kritika Kultura, Tomas, UP Forum, Ani, Pingkian, High Chair, Bulatlat, among others.
