Joel Pablo Salud started his career as editorial assistant and, later on, writer and journalist for the Manila Standard and The Manila Times a little over three decades ago.
Today, Salud is the author of three books—a collection of short fiction, The Distance of Rhymes and Other Tragedies, and two collections of political essays,Blood Republic and The Chief is in the House.
He has sat as juror for the country’s most prestigious journalism and literary awards, namely the Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature, the Nick Joaquin Literary Awards, the National Book Development Board-Manila Critics Circle National Book Awards, the F. Sionil José Young Writers Prize, the Bright Leaf Journalism awards, and the Quill Awards.
He is the recipient of fellowships from the 53rd University of the Philippines National Writers Workshop for Mid-Career Authors, and recently the Jaime V. Ongpin Excellence in Journalism. He is also a member of the Philippine Center for International PEN, Unyon ng mga Manunulat sa Pilipinas, and the Manila Critics Circle.
For the last six years, he’s been actively doing the rounds of the country’s top colleges and universities as lecturer on Journalism Ethics, Creative Writing, and other subjects. He was also invited to speak during the annual Philippine Center for International PEN Congress, Union of Writers of the Philippines Congress, and the Philippine International Literary Festival.
He is currently the editor-in-chief of the Philippines Graphic magazine, the longest running political and literary newsweekly in the country.
