The UP Likhaan: Institute of Creative Writing calls for submissions to the fifth cycle of the Amelia Lapeña-Bonifacio Writers Workshop, slated this year for July 22 to 26, 2020 in Quezon City. This year’s workshop will be focusing on spoken word or performance poetry as an emerging genre of compelling influence and intricacy of craft.

This is propounded by the proliferation of spoken word on video-based media on YouTube, Facebook, and other social media platforms; the scope and influence of such groups as Words Anonymous and the FlipTop Battle League; and even its exposure in broadcast media, like Bigkas Pilipinas on radio and On the Wings of Love on television.

Helmed by Dr. Vim Nadera as workshop director, the panelists this year will include Banaue Miclat-Janssen and Kooky Tuason, among other seasoned artists in the lineup of instructors for the young writer-performers to be accepted as fellows for the year.

Emerging poets, spoken word artists, rappers, and emcees who are at least 18 years of age as of July 22, 2020 are invited to submit TWO (2) of their works or works-in-progress for this year’s cycle. Submitted workshop pieces should not have been previously published or performed in public. Any topic, theme, and style is welcome, although the length of each workshop piece is ideally 10 minutes maximum when performed. The language may be in English or Filipino; however, code-switching to regional languages is allowed provided that translations are supplied for the readers.

The entry must be accompanied by a video of a sample piece (linked or attached), a short biographical note of not more than 150 words, and the author’s photo. The author’s name must not appear anywhere on the written work. The complete portfolio must be submitted electronically to [email protected] on or before 24 April 2020.

Accepted applicants will receive a modest stipend. Board and lodging will be provided at the workshop venue in Quezon City.
