I’m Herbel Santiago, a writer, teacher, and development worker.

I’m a graduate of Bachelor of Arts Literature in English from Ateneo de Manila University. I write poetry, stories, and essays in Filipino and English. A working scholar while in college with humble roots, I found that the characters of my stories narrate the lives of the people I’ve encountered. My pen tends to immortalize the struggles and pains of my people, as well as their unique strenght and resilience.

As a teacher, I aim to pass on the gift of storytelling and the value of exploring multiple voices to the next generation. I realize that I refuse to create a society monopolized by a single voice whose version of truth is created by those in power. In my classroom, stories are playful and raw outlet of emotions. But more than that, they are windows that young minds are using to peer into the thinking patterns and behaviors of people.

When I became a teacher, I realized that it is time for me to write again. Maybe, just maybe, my students and future generation of students will understand humanity through the words that I weaved and will be weaving.
