Denise O’Hara launches her third edition of Kwento an Online Scriptwriting Workshop that will start on July 10, 2021.

Kwento ni Denise O’hara is a Scriptwriting Workshop that aims to guide beginner writers into creating/crafting their story into a screenplay through a more flexible process that nurtures their narrative voice – a necessary step – before they enter into writing as a profession.

Now on its third edition, Denise O’hara opened a new course, the Advanced Scriptwriting Workshop that will help hone the writing skills of those who already have experienced writing. This course aims to develop full storylines/screenplay into a workable draft 2, by discussing and refining the elements of a screenplay (i.e. dialoguing, plot development, structuring, and tone). Focusing on the writer’s intent and aesthetics, the Advanced workshop aims to develop a compelling and competent script.

Started on August 29, 2020, the workshop had already produced more than 25 students and full-length scripts that are guided personally by Denise O’hara.

Denise O’Hara was a student of Comparative Literature in the University of the Philippines (Diliman) where she fell in love with writing. As such, she became a writer for television. She started writing for ABS-CBN on 2004. Among her works are teleseryes such as Hiram, Sa Piling Mo, Ysabella, Kahit Isang Saglit, Be Careful With My Heart, Bagong Umaga and the adaptation of the koreanovela, Only You.

Her directorial debut “Mamang” won her first Gawad Urian for Best Director. The film was also nominated for best Film during the Cinemalaya 2018 and was awarded Best First Feature by the Young Critics Circle in 2019.. Her second feature “Tayo Muna Habang Hindi pa Tayo” was nominated for Best Director and Best Picture during the Cinema One Originals Digital Film Festival in 2019. She also won an Award of Distinction as a Director during the Philippines Daily Inquirer Indie Bravo! Award.

Her other works include Purgatoryo, where she won the Pylon Award for Best Screenplay, shared with Joseph Israel Laban, during the QCinema International Film Festival. She also shared YCC Nominated films for Best Screenplay Kuya Wes, Baconaua and Kiko Boksingero.

As a Gawad Urian Nominee for Screenplay herself, she believes in the idea that to excel more in the industry, people need to have mentors that are willing to guide budding filmmakers. During the first two editions, fellow filmmakers Sheron Dayoc, Arden Rod Condez, Thop Nazareno, Ted Boborol and Lee Briones Meily joined the workshop as co-mentors to help the students.

Both the Basic and the Advanced workshop will start on July 10 and will happen every weekends. However, the Basic will only have 8 sessions, while the latter will have 13 sessions. Both of the courses aims to have a finished competitive full length screenplay by the end of the course.
