“Spoken word poetry,” isa sa mga pinakakontemporaryong paraan ng pagtula at pagtanghal na umusbong noong 2015. Tinalakay natin ito kasama ng mga fellows ng natapos na 5th Amelia Lapeña-Bonifacio Writers Workshop. Ngayon, samahan niyo kaming mas kilalanin pa ang spoken word at ang kasaysayan nito sa Pilipinas sa ikapitong episode ng PAN: “Tanghal Mo, Tula Mo.” Ito ay gaganapin sa 28 Agosto, 3.n.h. 

Bago nga ba talaga ang spoken word sa Pilipinas? May mga spekulasyon na sumikat ito kasabay ng pag-usbong nito sa Kanluran. Pero hindi na natin kailangan pang ilayo ang ating pagtingin kung nakatali na sa ating kasaysayan ang arte ng pagbigkas. May mahabang tradisyon tayo ng spoken word na nagmumula pa sa mga epiko ng ating mga katutubo. Kasama rin dito ang tradisyon ng pagdedebate na nagmula kay Francisco Balagtas. 

Iba’t ibang perspektibo at pagkakakilala sa spoken word ang dala ng ating mga kasama na sina Gemino Abad, Chris Millado, Ralph Fonte, Cindy Velasquez, at Leandro Reyes. Ang ating tagapagpadaloy ay isa ring batikan sa spoken word, si Vim Nadera. 

Balikan natin ang pinagmulan ng spoken word sa Pilipinas at suriin natin ang kalagayan nito ngayon. Paano pa ba natin pagyayamanin ang ating tradisyong oral? Pag-usapan natin yan sa darating na Sabado.

TUNGKOL SA MGA TAGAPAGSALITA

CHRIS MILLADO currently serves as the Vice-President and Artistic Director of the Cultural Center of the Philippines and oversees the artistic programs in the performing arts, literature, cinema, and visual arts. He recently led the Center in its shift to online programming during the lockdown caused by the pandemic. He also spearheaded the second print edition of the twelve volumes Encyclopedia of Philippine Art including its online digital version. Some of the digital productions which he launched include the CCP Historical Timeline, the CCP Digital Collection and the CCP Channel. Some of the Festivals he has curated include: the annual Pasinaya CCP Open House Festival, Festival of Arts and Ideas, International Theater Festival, National Theater Festival, among others. An accomplished stage director and playwright, his works have been produced in Manila, San Francisco, Chicago, Hawaii, and New York (May-i Theater, Juilliard School). After graduating from the Theater Arts Program at the University of the Philippines, he earned a Masters degree in Performance Studies from New York University through a Fulbright Hays scholarship. He has taught courses in Theater Arts, Performance Studies, and Philippine Studies. He spearheaded the organization of Filipino-American theater companies in the US. He also served as Associate Artistic Director of the Tanghalang Pilipino.

He has been a two-time recipient of the Rockefeller residency in Bellagio, Italy; a fellow to the Salzburg Global Seminar on the Performing Arts. He held a Fellowship with the DeVos Institute for Arts Management at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC. His latest works for the stage include “Mabining Mandirigma”, “Aurelio Sedisyoso” and “Ding, ang Bato!”

Cindy Velasquez was a fellow to the Cornelio Faigao Memorial Workshop, Iligan National Writers Workshop, J. Elizalde Navarro National Arts Criticism Workshop, Iyas National Writers Workshop, and the Kritika National Workshop on Art and Cultural Criticism. Her poems have been published in local and national publications. Velasquez’s awards include the Jimmy Y. Balacuit Award for poetry in 2009, the Vicente Ranudo Literary Excellence Award in 2019, as well as the Gawad Urian Best Music in 2020. Her first poetry collection Lawas was published in 2016. She is the podcast producer and editor of Basabalak Kanunay.

Si Ralph Fonte ay makata at manggagamot. Naitampok na sa iba’t ibang lathalain tulad ng Cha: An Asian Literary Journal, Cordite Poetry Review, TOMAS, at Likhaan: The Journal of Contemporary Philippine Literature ang kaniyang mga akda. Nagwagi na rin ng mga gantimpala sa ilang patimpalak tulad ng Gawad Carlos Palanca at ng Gawad Maningning Miclat ang kaniyang mga tula. Nakapagtanghal na rin siya bilang panauhing pandangal sa iba’t ibang entablado at pagdiriwang ng panitikan sa Asya, samantalang hinirang naman bilang kauna-unahang Tanghal-Makata ng Taon sa Performatura 2019 ng Sentrong Pangkultura ng Pilipinas. Kasalukuyan siyang naglilingkod sa Palawan bilang manggagamot.

Bearer of a storytelling family’s lasting legacy, Leandro Reyes, the great grandson of Severino “Lola Basyang” Reyes, brings the craft of tale-telling into a new age; uses his training in theater arts to paint performance poetry with elaborative gestures; He represented the Philippines in the 2018 Lit Up Asia Poetry slam in Singapore wherein he finished as a semi finalist, soon after he competed in the Cultural Center of the Philippines Performatura slam and finished as a finalist.

Leandro, an event producer and touring artist, has a track on the spoken word album Southversive and Bigkas Pilipinas vol. 2, has released the self published graphic poetry book “Love, Smog, and All Things Warm” with co-creator Camcas Cervantes; He is set for a 2021 Singapore – Malaysia Poetry tour and is hoping to release his next book this on the same year.

TUNGKOL SA TAGAPAGPADALOY

Si Victor Emmanuel Carmelo Daelo Nadera, Jr. ay propesor sa Unibersidad ng Pilipinas sa Diliman kung saan siya nagtapos ng Ph.D. Philippine Studies at naglingkod bilang Direktor ng Likhaan: U.P. Institute of Creative Writing.  Noong 1985 itinanghal si Vim na Makata ng Taon ng Surian ng Wikang Pambansa habang siya ang editor-in-chief ng Varsitarian. Noon din niya sinimulan ang Ustetika Annual Awards for Literature. Inanyayahan siya – kasama sina Ariel Dim. Borlongan, at Edwin Abayon — upang maging bahagi ng Rio Alma Poetry Clinic na kinalaunan ay naging Linangan sa Imahen, Retorika, at Anyo (LIRA).  Habang nasa sa U.S.T. Graduate School, siya ay inirekomenda ng makatang si Dean Ophelia Alcantara Dimalanta sa kakaibang Silliman University Semestral Writers Workshop noong 1989. Sa Silliman University naging guro niya ang Pambansang Alagad ng Sining na Edith Tiempo at si Dr. Edilberto Tiempo na magkatuwang na nag-umpisa ng palihang pampanitikan sa Filipinas. Tumagal siya sa Dumaguete City upang sumali sa Silliman University Summer Writers Workshop noong 1990.  Sa pagpasok ng Dekada ’90, siya ay nagturo sa U.S.T., University of the East, De La Salle University; St. Paul’s College (Manila) – bago siya pumasok sa U.P. College of Arts and Letters. Sa Department of English and Comparative Literature, pinagturo siya ng Performance Poetry sa imbitasyon ni Dr. Cristina Pantoja Hidalgo. Kaya, mula 1995 hanggang 2005, nakabuo siya ng maraming grupong nagtatanghal ng tula taon-taon. Naging bahagi siya ng  Departamento ng Filipino at Panitikan ng Pilipinas mula noong 1995 hanggang ngayong pinagtuturo siya ng Trauma at Malikhaing Pagsulat.
