The Valenzuela Arts and Literary Society, in cooperation with the Valenzuela City Cultural Affairs and Tourism Development Office (CATDO) & Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), is now accepting applications to the VALENZUELA WRITERS WORKSHOP 2021 which will be held online on November 27, 28, and December 4.

The VWW is the first community-based and LGU-funded writing workshop in the country and is envisioned to be an annual creative writing fellowship of new and emerging writers from Valenzuela. It is aimed to make the city a haven for creative writers. The fellows will be entitled to free registration and certificate of completion at the end of the workshop. Fellows will receive a continuing mentorship program online from the core group of the panelists and VALS membership. The revised works of the fellows will also be digitally published in the next issue of “Ang Pulo”, its official arts and literary journal.

To be eligible, an applicant must be a resident of Valenzuela City, 18 years or older, and should not have attended any regional and national writers’ workshops organized by reputable creative writing centers and institutes. The workshop is open to students, professionals, workers, and out-of-school youths. They must be willing to finish all the sessions of the three-day workshop via online.

Fellowships are open for poetry, fiction (maikling kuwento, dagli, etc.), personal essay, works for children, and play/screenplay in Filipino or English.


1. A digital word file (.doc or.docx) of one original and unpublished manuscript. The manuscripts shall be composed of any of the following:

• For Poetry: 2 poems.

• For Fiction: 1 short story of any genre or 2 flash fiction.

• For the Personal Essay: 1 essay or 3 micro-essays.

* For play/screenplay: one-act play, a screenplay for a short film, or an excerpt from a full-length film (the first 10 sequences).

2. A brief bionote with contact details and most recent photo (jpg or png).

This year’s workshop will be directed by Malaya Nicolas.

The VWW 2021 is part of the city’s celebration of the National Book Development Month. This year’s VWW is in partnership with the Cultural Affairs and Tourism Development Office headed by Mr. Jonathan Balsamo and Cultural Center of the Philippines through Ms. Beverly Siy.
