John Brixter Tino, a Journalism sophomore of PUP Manila, is the newly named Grand Winner of the 2021 Gawad Rene O. Villanueva, Pambansang Timpalak para sa Personal na Sanaysay. The inaugural literary tilt had generated 214 entries, coming from Senior High students and college undergraduates nationwide. His winning essay titled “Lente” ruminates on his differently abled vision which appears both as a gift and a whip.

Tino who has just turned 21 is also currently a LIRA Poetry Fellow and he bagged the 2nd Prize in the 2021 Maningning Miclat Poetry Contest for his collection,Sa Loob ng Saloob.He will receive a cash prize of 30k, a gold medallion and a plaque.

Adrian  Medina Pregonir is First Honorable Mention for his piece, “Sapagkat Hindi Nalalasing ang Kasaysayan”. He is a student of Notre Dame of Marbel University, lives in Banga, South Cotabato and a Palanca winner in Kabataan Essay in Filipino. Lanylyn Bellen, on the other hand, is Second Honorable Mention for her essay,”Danas: Mula Isla Hanggang Lungsod”. She is from PUP Manila and currently a member of Alpas, a collective of  literary writers. She hails from the island of Rapu-Rapu in Albay.

Judges of the said tilt include some of the country’s most distinguished writers, namely, Abdon Balde Jr, Joey Baquiran, Emman Barrameda,Luna Sicat-Cleto, Kristian Sendon Cordero,Allan Popa and Elyrah-Salanga Torralba.

The contest is an initiative of South Road LitForum under founding adviser Niles Jordan Breis and managing director Pat Baloloy, in cooperation with NCLA-NCCA South Luzon, Ms. Ana Marie Villanueva and the ROV Literary Administrators and prize-winning authors Nick Pichay, Tim Dacanay and Romulo Baquiran, Jr.
