About the Workshop

The U.P. National Writers Workshop is the annual workshop of Likhaan: The U.P. Institute of Creative Writing (ICW).

Previously dedicated to helping up-and-coming writers, the UP National Writers Workshop has been reformatted to mentoring writers in mid-career. The workshop aims to help writers who have already published (or are on the verge of publishing) a book, or have won major literary awards, further hone their craft. Writers from all over the country compete for 12 fellowships. The workshop on the craft of writing is focused on individual manuscripts by the fellows in poetry, fiction and drama in English and Filipino. The workshop is Likhaan’s most important outreach program and perhaps the most prestigious in our country today, it entails a considerable budgetary allocation from the UP Diliman Chancellor and a grant from the UP Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs.

One of the first workshop directors was the late N. V. M. Gonzalez. The Advisers, Fellows, and Associates of the UP ICW comprise the workshop panel. They are National Artist for Literature Virgilio S. Almario, National Artist for Literature Bienvenido Lumbera, National Artist for Theater Amelia Lapeña-Bonifacio, Gémino H. Abad, Jose Y. Dalisay Jr., Charlson Ong, Cristina Pantoja Hidalgo, J. Neil Garcia, Jun Cruz Reyes, Victor Emmanuel Carmelo Nadera Jr., Luna Sicat-Cleto, Eugene Y. Evasco, Romulo P. Baquiran Jr., Ramon Guillermo, Anna Sanchez, Rolando Tolentino, and Vladimeir Gonzales.
